A group of women members of the congregation and others travelled to Peru for four weeks in April 2005 to support a project run by the Vine Trust, Scripture Union Peru and "Amazon Hope." In just ten days, they provided medical and dental treatment to almost 1000 people from 15 riverbank communities. One man was aged 94 and still working in the fields. They came with a variety of illnesses; malaria; infestations; chest infections to name a few. The children were patient and well behaved, though dental decay was rife. An enthusiastic pastoral team on board the "Amazon Hope" did outreach to the communities and invited them on board for children's activities and to watch religious videos. Each morning started with hymns in Spanish. One village provided a canoe trip as a 'thank you' to the volunteers. Jim (18) a gap year student who had worked with street boys was invaluable as translator; Daniella, a dedicated British dentist who usually worked in a clinic in Iquitos and Dr. Elizabeth Calle, national director of medical ministry were all with the Peruvian SU. Dr. Calle asks for continuing prayers to support her work.
